Would I Qualify For Monthly Social Security Benefits If I Marry?
We are both 71. I do not receive Social Security - not eligible. I do receive Medicare benefits. He receives Social Security and Medicare. If we marry, will I receive monthly Social Security? Survivors benefits?
Hi,
It sounds like you could qualify for monthly spousal benefits after you've been married for at least a year (https://www.ssa.gov/OP_Home/handbook/handbook.03/handbook-0305.html). And, you may qualify for survivor benefits if your spouse dies before you and you have been married for at least 9 months (https://www.ssa.gov/OP_Home/handbook/handbook.04/handbook-0401.html).
However, if you happen to receive a government pension based on your work that was exempt from Social Security taxes, your pension could cause some or all of your spousal or survivor benefits to be withheld.
