Will Social Security Cut Our SSI Benefits When We Get Married?

I wanted to know because me and my fiance both receive SSI. When we get married will Social security cut us?

Hi,

I assume by SSI you are referring to Supplemental Security Income (https://www.ssa.gov/ssi/). The maximum SSI payment to an eligible couple this year is $1,103, as opposed to $735 each for eligible individuals. Therefore, your marriage may very well result in a cut in your benefits. Your actual benefit rates will depend on your specific circumstances, however, so I can't tell you the exact effect that your marriage will have on your SSI payments.

Best, Jerry
