Will My Brother Lose His SSI If I Sell Our House?
Me and my brother have a house it's in both our names he is on SSI I'm his POA if I sell the house to take care of him will he lose his ssi
Hi,
Assuming that your brother is unmarried, he can have no more than $2000 in resources and still qualify for Supplemental Security Income (SSI). The value of a home in which he lives would be excluded from counting as a resource, though, so if you use the proceeds from the sale of your brother's current home to purchase a new home in which he'll live he'll probably still qualify. However, if he retains more than $2000 of the proceeds in non-excludable resources such as cash, then yes he would likely lose his SSI.
Best, Jerry
