When Should My Wife Elect To Start Receiving Spousal Benefits?
My wife turns 66 (FRA) in March 2018.
She is currently receiving her own retirement benefit.
Upon reaching her FRA she will file for the extra spousal benefit.
When does she ask for this change to begin?
Is her first new additional benefit check paid in March or April?
Hi,
If your wife is eligible for an excess spousal benefit from your record and she attains age 66 in March 2018 (i.e. DOB March 2 1952 - April 1 1952), she would want to file for spousal benefits effective with March 2018 in order to receive an unreduced spousal rate. Social Security benefits for the month of March are paid in April.
Best, Jerry
