What Would I Receive In The Event Of My Husband's Death?
I started receiving my social security benefits at full retirement age of 66. (Born in 1949). When my husband turned 66 (Born later in 1949) I applied for spousal benefits and my benefit increased to 1/2 of his benefit. If my husband dies (God forbid) what benefit would I receive? I think I would get his full benefit, but what happens to my benefit? My benefit is 1364 and his is 2754.
Hi,
In the event of your husband's death, your total benefit amount would be increased to the amount that he was receiving. Specifically, what you would be paid is your own retirement benefit plus a widow's benefit equal to the difference between your retirement benefit amount and your husband's full benefit amount.
Best, Jerry
