Is This True?

My husband is currently receiving SSA benefits. Started in January at age 66. I am 65 years of age. I was told by the SSA in Chicago that I should wait until I am 66 and claim under spousal and my benefits will grow until I am 70. Is this true? I thought SSA did away with this provision. Thanks

Hi,

Yes, it's true. People born prior to January 2 1954 can still file for spousal benefits only at age 66 and let their own retirement benefit rate grow until age 70 (https://www.ssa.gov/planners/retire/deemedfaq.html). This may very well be the best option for you, but you might want to run the maximization software available on this website to be sure.

Best, Jerry
