Is It True That I Can Collect Social Security Now?
Larry, i was married over 10years and my ex husband age 56 retired as we divorced. The Social Security lady told me i was allowed to collect a SS benefit now at age 52 because my ex has fully retired prior to our divorce. Is that True?

Hi Mia,
If your ex is still living you can't get divorced spousal benefits until you are at least age 62, so I have no idea what the lady you spoke with at Social Security was talking about. Disabled surviving divorced spousal benefits can be payable as early as age 50, but that would only apply if you are disabled and your ex is deceased. Or, if you have an eligible child in your care and your ex is deceased, you may qualify for a divorced mother's benefit (https://www.ssa.gov/OP_Home/handbook/handbook.04/handbook-0416.html).
