If I Receive SSI And If I Sell My House And Purchase A Less Expensive One, Can I Use The Difference To Pay For Moving Expenses?
If I sell my house for 60,000n buy another one for 40,000 can I use 20,000 for moving expenses on ssi
Hi. Potentially, yes. Proceeds from the sale of your home are excluded from counting as a resource for Supplemental Security Income (SSI) purposes if you use the proceeds to buy a new home to live in within 3 calendar months (https://secure.ssa.gov/apps10/poms.nsf/lnx/0501130110). Moving expenses are considered as an allowable use of the proceeds, but you'll need to prove to Social Security that you actually used any excess proceeds on allowable expenses.
Best, Jerry
