Could I Leave My Home To My Grandson Without It Affecting His SSI?

I WOULD LIKE TO LEAVE MY HOME TO MY GRSON WHO RECIIEVE S SSI .HOW EVER I LIVE IN CALIF HE LIVES IN WYOMING COULD HE SELL MY HOME , USE THE MONEY FOR A HOME THERE IN WYOMING WITH OUT IT AFFECTING HIS SSI?

Hi,

Assuming that your grandson is unmarried, he couldn't have assets of more than $2000 and still be eligible for Supplemental Security Income (SSI). A home in which an SSI recipient lives is excluded from counting as an asset, though, so if your grandson buys and lives in a home he could potentially qualify for SSI if he meets the other requirements. However, there is also an income limit for SSI, and inheritances count toward that limit. So, it's likely that your grandson would be ineligible for SSI for at least a month if he inherits your home.

Best, Jerry
