Can My Wife Claim Spousal Benefits When I Apply For My Benefits And Then Switch To Her Own Benefits At Age 70?

I am 67 years 2 months old and my spouse is 66 years 4 months old (FRA). We each have our own SS benefits from our work record. If I retire 5 months from now, can my spouse obtain spousal benefits from my work record at that same time, then switch to her own delayed benefits when she turns 70 years old?

Hi. No. Only people who were born prior to January 2 1954 are allowed to apply for spousal benefits without being required to apply for their own Social Security retirement benefits at the same time (https://www.ssa.gov/benefits/retirement/planner/claiming.html).

You and your wife should want to strongly consider using our software (https://maximizemysocialsecurity.com/purchase) to fully analyze all of your options so that you can determine the best overall strategy for maximizing your benefits.

Best, Jerry
