Can My Mother In Law Own A House Without Losing Her Benefits?

Can My mother in law be a cosigner in a house? Or can she buy a house under her name without loosing her retirement benefits? She is receiving retirement money from her and her passed away husband. I hope I can get an answer as soon as possible, thank You.

Hi,

Whether or not a person owns a house has no effect on any type of Social Security benefits. There is no limit on the amount or type or assets that you can own and still receive Social Security benefits. But, if your mother in law receives Supplemental Security Income (SSI), owning or co-owning a house in which she doesn't live could affect her eligibility (https://www.ssa.gov/ssi/).

Best, Jerry
