Can I Receive Spouse's Benefits?

When I turn 66, can I take collect my spousal benefits if my spouse is taking his SS benefits and he does not suspend?
Do I have to sign up for my benefits and then suspend to collect the spousal benefits?
Thank you,
Mary

Mary,
Yes, If your husband is receiving his retirement benefit, then you can receive your spouse's benefit.
Definitely DO NOT file for, and suspend receipt of, your retirement benefit before you file for your spouse's benefit! If you do, then you would only receive the excess of your spouse's benefit over your retirement benefit and that could even be zero. Just file a restricted application for spouse's benefits only.
Best,
Mike
