Can I Delay Filing For My Retirement Benefits Until January 2024 And Receive Six Months Of Back Benefits From 2023?
I am currently receiving spousal benefits and plan to file for my own retirement benefit at age 70. My birthdate is July 11, 1953. Can I delay filing for my retirement benefit until January of 2024 and receive 6 months of benefits from 2023?

Hi. Yes, since you're over full retirement age (FRA), you can be paid benefits for up to 6 months retroactively from the month you apply. However, Social Security would then deduct the spousal benefits you were paid for those months, so you wouldn't gain any net benefits by doing so.
